Attachment Styles – Secure and Insecure Relationships

There are two main categories of attachment styles – secure and insecure. Those people with a secure attachment style were raised by caregivers who were present, engaged, and able to respond to an infant’s needs in a predictable way. Those infants receive the kind of support and positive interactions with adults that allow them to grow into well-adjusted adults.

When you have a secure attachment style, you are able to engage in relationships and feel entirely safe doing so. You avoid attachments with people that demonstrate toxic behaviors and seek out positive, healthy relationships instead.

Insecure attachment styles develop as a result of negative interactions with our primary caregivers as infants. There are three insecure attachment styles:

Anxious (or preoccupied) attachment

Avoidant (or dismissive) attachment

Disorganized (or fearful-avoidant) attachment
